Before I started working on \u201cAntigone in Krynki\u201d (which was staged under a name \u201cAntihone\u201d with a typical Belorussian \u201ch\u201d), I had just finished writing \u201cHannah Arendt doesn\u2019t love me\u201d. The title of the play refers to the words Hannah Arendt wrote to Gershom Scholem in a letter from 1963, right after her book \u201cEichmann in Jerusalem\u201d had been published. Scholem accused Arendt of lack of Ahabath Israel \u2013 love for the Jewish nation. Arendt responded with: \u201cI have never in my life &#8220;loved&#8221; any people or collective \u2014 neither the German people, nor the French, nor the American, nor the working class or anything of that sort. The protagonists of \u201cAntihone\u201d love not the nation or the country, but the land of their fathers, in which their ancestors are buried, the land that feeds them with its crops, and on which their family homes were built. \u201cI\u2019m a local\u201d &#8211; Ksenia, a Polish woman of Orthodox faith, says about herself during an interrogation.
