„Bazuka” is a story of Sylwia, who, as a young girl, experiences unwanted pregnancy. She cannot afford the abortion, therefore, she has to give birth to a child she bears. Her partner and people surrounding Sylwia are convinced that she had become a mother at the moment of the conception, as the role of a mother is a “natural” consequence of being a woman. Sylwia does not feel like a mother should and she is not able to love her baby, so she abandons him. At this point a battle for her new life begins. It turns out that the baby somehow impacted both, the memory of her body and soul, so Sylwia feels guilty, haunted by remorse. The consequences of the very first sexual interaction, determine her whole life. Lonesome, unloved and unable to love Sylwia abandons her child and sets off a dramatic chain of events, of great importance and influence that she gets to know no sooner than after she dies.
There was a yellow poster on the wall of the waiting room. It said: Smoking while pregnant is a threat to your child’s health and life. I immediately lit one up.
Sylwia’s struggles are being observed by the three women – witches. Their commentaries, allusions, impressions and own stories about motherhood are complementary with the protagonist’s life story. Irena Imperatrix, Byzantine empress, wounds her own son, jealous of his power. Frau Helga, raped by a Soviet soldier, gives birth to a child, who she cannot leave, although as he grows old, he starts to resemble the rapist more and more. Żorżeta, having fun and partying, treats an abortion like a simple medical operation. The three women become Sylwia’s guides in the three lands – the next levels of her consciousness. In the land of Fitness Torture Sylwia’s body is supposed to be set free from the painful memories. In the Smothering Valley her soul is supposed to find relief and on the Island of Prinkipo, she should experience the final understanding. It is here, among the children abandoned by civilization and forgotten by the society, where Sylwia finds her own son, Bazuka, and makes peace with her destiny.
A radio adaptation of this theatrical play was also created.
